Some reccomended music blogs
I felt like I let down poor Kevin when he asked how one can keep in touch with the comings and goings of new material, so I did some more reasearch :)
http://thebadplus.typepad.com/ : A good blog written by the Pianist from the Bad Plus, Ethan Iverson. It covers most genres of Jazz, and is quite well written.
Oh also if you happen to have some spare book tokens left over from Christmas I would highly advise The Penguin Guide to Jazz. It is a fantastic source for literally every Jazz record that is still being sold, it has great little reviews on all the album and a ranking system, they also highlight which albums they feel are a cut above the rest! A must have for when you are browsing through second hand cd stores.
Another good way is to go onto the many Jazz forums out there, I have very rarely meet a Jazz fanatic who as soon as you say you are interested in Jazz, doesn’t hop with excitment and has a massve list of cd’s you must have! It would seem most jazz fans are pretty friendly, of course you get the ocasional pretensious prick…..
Ok, time to get some song info up!
First Show of the season :
Theme : Best opening tracks
1.Better git it in yo soul by Charles Mingus Album : Mingus Ah Um
So, I decided to go down to the Pavilion last night see theMichiel Borstlap Trio. I had only heard the name going into the gig, but now I feel compelled to make sure everyone else knows more!
Borstlap is a Dutch pianist making his way through the ranks of contemporary Jazz with his own compositions; already having the Monk and BMI composers awards under his belt.
He embraces electronics into his work and admits to being influence by the great Joe Zawinul, though I was immediately reminded of Keith Jarret when he played his first Ballad.
The band were just as good as him. What do you get when you mix two crisp ride cymbals a love for a rim shots and a cheeky demeanor? Erik Kooger that’s who, and a name that will be keeping my eye out for. Fantastic rhythm and gives off a wonderful sense of exuberance while playing. On bass was an eccentric looking chap by the name of Harry Emery, he has two fingers bigger than all mine together, a great feel for the music and a tasteful love for slap. Needless to say when you put all three of these musicians together one hell of gig was to be seen.
Its an old Programme i did last year, its the second part of a two part show I did on Miles davis, but it only recorded 20mins for some reason, anyways enjoy!
Just something to keep you guys going!
Bad news guys……. no show this week :(
It appears that this weeks show is not to be, due some mis understandings it appears that i won’t be able to record my show in time for tonight…… Sorry guys guess you will just have to wait next week!
Just the current Station poster!
Kiniz Jazz cat Korner - Don Pullen
I also occasionally do little reviews on this mad lads chicken music blog
Starting from today there will be a guest columnist who will be writing about the wonders of Jazz. Here we go.
Kinikeens: Introducing the Don Pullen and the hot dog flavoured Jazz!!!
So, over the summer I listened to a lot of music, but I’d say the artist that made the biggest impression on me would have to be olde jazz cat Don Pullen.
A piano player by trade, he just instantly gave off this aura of energy, and real individuality. He seems to have made his way though the ranks chilling with olde chicken Charlie Mingus.
His mentor can definatly be heard in his solo stuff, he really knows how to create a big sound without being over powering and lets you find new things with every listen. The album New Beginnings is how I got introduced to him, so I would say go out and listen to that!
Great blend of avant garde jazz and Latin influences, a corking mix if I do say so myself! Also with big man Willy Tones aka Tony Williams on drums and Gary Peacock on bass you know it’s a keeper!!!!
Oh also, first show of the year starts thursday at 9:30, be there!
I’m doing a show in honour of it being the opening show of the season, so…… the theme of the show is best opening tracks on albums, keep in mind i only have an hour and half and there are so many tracks that go under that title, so i just pick the ones that are fresh in my mind.
